Monid sells AI agents API access by the call, as an alternative to subscriptions

The agent tool router reports 1,700+ tools and 4 million transactions, but reports disagree on funding: .1 million pre-seed in September, about .7 million in an October 6 report.

Key takeaways
  • Monid lets agents discover, inspect and run third-party tools, paying per call from one prepaid balance.
  • Its site shows about $0.0013 per call and $1 in free credit; a 10% fee and zero-cost failed calls appear only in an October 6 report.
  • Funding is disputed: $2.1 million pre-seed (September 1) versus about $7.7 million (October 6, single source).

Monid, a San Francisco startup, runs what it calls an "agent-native tool router and marketplace" that lets AI agents find, test and pay for third-party APIs one call at a time, from a single prepaid balance. It was in the news again this week, but the funding figures conflict: a September 1, 2026 report cites a $2.1 million pre-seed, while an October 6 report describes a round of about $7.7 million.

What Monid does

Monid is pitched as "OpenRouter for agent tools." OpenRouter gives developers one account across many AI models. Monid does the same for the tools an agent calls during a task, such as search, SEO, lead generation, market data and media creation.

  • Three steps: the agent discovers a tool, inspects it, then runs it.
  • One balance: developers integrate once and fund a prepaid balance. Each call is debited from it, so there are no separate subscriptions or invoices per provider.
  • Ways to connect: Monid's site lists a skill, an MCP server and a command-line tool.
  • Open source: the code is on GitHub. The October 6 report says the engine is built on Deno 2 and TypeScript under the MIT license. Tool providers can contribute tools.

Pricing and scale

  • Monid's site shows an example price of $0.0013 per call and gives new users $1 in free credit.
  • The October 6 report says there is a 10% platform fee on top of provider rates and that failed calls are billed at zero. Monid's site, as we could read it, does not state either.
  • Monid says its catalog covers 1,700 or more tools from 55 or more providers. Both reports cite more than 4 million agent transactions. That is the company's own figure and has not been independently verified.

The funding discrepancy

The September 1 report names 1984 Ventures, Llama Ventures, Untapped Capital and Founders, Inc. as investors in the $2.1 million pre-seed. The October 6 report names the same two pre-seed investors but does not name backers for the $7.7 million figure, and we found no second source for it. Monid's website mentions neither round. Treat the larger number as unconfirmed until the company or an investor states it.

Why it matters

Most SaaS pricing assumes a person logs in regularly. Agents call a tool occasionally, in bursts, and may never need a seat. Monid argues that this usage fits per-call billing better than monthly plans, and tool providers get a distribution channel in return for sharing revenue. Competitors such as Pipedream and Composio take a different approach, focusing on pre-configured integrations. If you sell an API or a SaaS product that agents might call, check whether a seat-based plan is the only way to buy it. If you build agents, compare per-call pricing against the subscriptions you would otherwise stack up. See also AI agents are coming for the SaaS stack.
