LegoGPT: AI generates buildable LEGO models from text—with guaranteed stability
Award-winning AI system predicts LEGO bricks one-at-a-time with physics validation, guaranteeing 98.8% of generated models won't fall over. Now free with interactive demo.
- LegoGPT won Best Paper (Marr Prize) at ICCV 2025 for text-to-LEGO generation.
- Physics-based validation guarantees 98.8% structural stability; generated models use 2,000+ pieces.
- Trained on 47,000+ LEGO structures; public dataset and code enable further research.
LegoGPT, an AI system that generates buildable LEGO models from text descriptions, just won the Best Paper Award (Marr Prize) at ICCV 2025. Built on a fine-tuned Llama-3.2 model and trained on 47,000+ LEGO structures, the system guarantees physical stability: 98.8% of generated models remain standing. Now available free with an interactive demo, LegoGPT and similar open-source tools are democratizing LEGO design—no expensive CAD software, no engineering expertise required.
How LegoGPT works
Rather than directly outputting 3D coordinates, LegoGPT predicts LEGO bricks one-at-a-time with physics validation built in:
- Prompt to prediction: Text description is processed through a fine-tuned language model.
- Brick-by-brick assembly: Model predicts brick type, color, and position iteratively.
- Physics validation: Gurobi solver analyzes each placement for compression, tension, and shear forces.
- Rollback on failure: If a brick placement violates stability constraints, the system reverts to the last stable state.
- Output formats: Generates LDraw files (LEGO CAD format), 3D models, and step-by-step instructions.
The key innovation: stability is guaranteed, not hoped for. Traditional LEGO CAD tools require human expertise; LegoGPT automates it.
Capabilities
- Text-to-LEGO: "A red spaceship with landing legs" → buildable model
- Scale: Generated models feature 2,000+ pieces with consistent structural integrity
- Customization: Control colors, themes, and complexity via prompts
- Mesh-to-brick conversion: Convert 3D scans into brick structures
- Interactive demo: Try it free at the official Gradio interface (online demo available)
- Command-line interface: Automate LEGO generation in workflows
- Export options: LDraw (LEGO CAD), OBJ, GLB, and printable instructions
Training and dataset
LegoGPT was trained on the StableText2Lego dataset: 47,000+ hand-built LEGO structures with text descriptions and 28,000+ unique 3D objects. The dataset is public, enabling researchers to extend the work or train competing models.
Open-source ecosystem
Three major projects now exist:
- LegoGPT (Carnegie Mellon): Physics-validated, ICCV award winner
- LDraw Nova (Hacker News Show HN): Multi-provider AI (Claude, GPT, others), VR support, Docker deployment
- GenerativeLEGO (University of Guelph): Graph neural networks, academic research platform
All are open source (MIT or AGPL); code and models are publicly available.
Availability
LegoGPT is free. Interactive demo available online (Gradio interface). Code and StableText2Lego dataset on GitHub: https://github.com/AvaLovelace1/LegoGPT. No API keys required for the demo; local installation requires standard ML dependencies (PyTorch, transformers).
Who benefits
- LEGO enthusiasts: Design models without CAD software
- Educators: Teach AI, graph neural networks, and physics simulation through LEGO
- Accessibility: People with mobility limitations can design builds via text
- Hobbyists: Rapid ideation—sketch a concept in text, see it rendered instantly
- STEM programs: Visual AI and ML learning tool
- LEGO Robotics competitions: Quickly generate robot chassis designs
Why it matters
LEGO design has traditionally required either expensive software (Bricklink Studio, LDraw Studio) or manual expertise. LegoGPT removes both barriers: text prompts replace CAD skills, and physics validation replaces trial-and-error. The ICCV award signals that academic research is solving real, creative problems—not just benchmarks. For the broader theme of "AI for creative workflows," LegoGPT proves that constrained domains (LEGO's finite brick set, physics rules) are where AI excels. Expect similar text-to-X tools for other "closed" creative domains: typography, architecture, circuit design. LegoGPT is the proof point.
